Given Ireland’s climate and dominant soil types, most homeowners will experience moss on their lawns at some point.

Hey friends! Today, we’re diving into the best hotels in Ireland, especially those perfect for couples. Ireland has it all when it comes to romantic getaways, from cliffside retreats to quirky, adults-only stays. Let’s skip the long intro and get right to it!

Here’s a list of amazing Irish getaways that offer:

  • Plenty of nearby activities
  • Great on-site facilities (like  spas)
  • A romantic setting

Ballyfin, County Laois

If you’re from Ireland, you must have heard about  Ballyfin, the most famous hotel around.

Picture this: stepping into a real-life fairy tale at Ballyfin, a stunning country house retreat nestled at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. Ballyfin, the 5-star retreat, is where luxury and peace come together, making it perfect for couples. Known for its beautiful rooms, excellent service, and calm surroundings, this restored mansion is ideal for a romantic getaway.

Location and nearby activities:

Ballyfin is located at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, County Laois( R32 PN34, Ireland), perfectly positioned for exploring the natural beauty and rich history of this County.

Slieve Bloom Mountains offers endless walks with stunning views – a hiker’s dream.

The surroundings are among the best in the world, with luxury at every turn. The restoration of this magnificent building is exceptional; I guess it took more time to restore than it did to build originally.

If you don’t wanna go out, no worries. Ballyfin itself provides lots of on-site activity options making it people’s favorites.

On-Site Activities:

  • Fishing and Boating: Spent a lazy afternoon on the lake, fishing and boating.
  • Falconry: Yes, I tried my hand at Falconry. It’s as cool as it sounds.
  • Horse Riding: Exploring the grounds on horseback felt like stepping back in time.
  • Bicycles and Buggies: Perfect for exploring the expansive 614-acre estate.
  • Clay Pigeon Shooting: It was fun, Lionel was just brilliant in teaching us how to shoot.

Not gonna lie, I loved my stay here for the activities. You need to pay extra for most of these but it’s worth it.

Don’t worry, there are more options like air rifle target shooting, archery, horse and carriage rides, and the Ballyfin picnic experience. I can assure you that you’ll find something to enjoy every day.

Atmosphere:

Ballyfin blends formality with ease and enjoyment. The reception rooms are grand and luxurious. From the grand Saloon at the heart of the house, to the long eighty-foot library, and the sunny Conservatory, which you reach through a hidden door in the library’s bookshelf, Ballyfin is full of delightful surprises. The house is decorated with Irish art and antiques from around the world, creating an atmosphere of elegance and historical charm.

Accommodation:

Let’s talk about those rooms – only 20 of them, each one a masterpiece of design. Think grand four-poster beds, marble bathrooms, and the kind of soft furnishings that make you want to sink in and never leave. There’s even a one-bed Gardener’s Cottage if you fancy a bit more seclusion.

We stayed in a state room over-looking the front of the house and lake, again, everything expected from a top 5 star hotel was available and more.

Facilities:

  • Bar: The hidden Cellar Bar is like discovering a secret lair. Cozy, intimate, and perfect for a pre-dinner drink.
  • Indoor Pool: The indoor pool overlooks the courtyard garden, and it’s as serene as it sounds. Perfect for a morning swim.
  • Spa: I treated myself to a spa day, and let me tell you, the treatments are next-level relaxation.
  • Restaurant: Dining here feels like being royalty. The food? Straight from the estate’s walled garden and local farms. The honey is made on-site by their own bees!(You must try and meet the bee man to hear all about  Ballyfin’s own bees, which provide the hotel with honey, honeycomb and wax)

Dining:

The food at Ballyfin is simply divine. From the gourmet meals in a room that looks like it’s straight out of a period drama to the fresh ingredients sourced locally, every bite was a delight. You might need to be a bit of a foodie to fully appreciate the menu, especially the tasting menu. The wine list has a great selection, and you won’t have to spend a fortune for a really good wine. And the wine pairing? Chef’s kiss!

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is not just a place to stay; it’s an experience of Ireland’s rugged beauty and rich history. Set on a vast 700-acre estate, this castle-turned-hotel offers a perfect blend of luxury, adventure, and relaxation. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the serene sounds of the river and the lush woodlands that surround this picturesque retreat.

Accommodation:

The castle hotel boasts 48 beautifully decorated rooms and suites, each offering comfort and luxury with views of either the river, mountains, or woodland. All the Classic Riverside Rooms and two of the Superior Rooms are in the original house.

The newer wing houses the remaining Superior rooms, Luxury rooms, and Riverside Suites, all with stunning views of the river and woodlands. Superior rooms can accommodate up to three people, while other categories are for a maximum of two. For ultimate privacy, the standalone Lottery Lodge and Owenmore Cottage provide an intimate retreat.

Whichever room you choose, you’ll find it easy to relax and sleep in this luxurious accommodation in the heart of  Connemara. I stayed in one of Ballynahinch’s beautifully appointed rooms with views that could inspire poetry – imagine waking up to the sound of the river outside your window and the mist rolling over the mountains. The rooms are elegantly furnished, combining old-world charm with modern comforts.

But hey, please note that the hotel does not have a lift, and some areas are not fully accessible. This is because the castle is a historical structure and a protected building, and these structural changes are not permitted.

Facilities and Activities

Activities: Guests can indulge in

  • Fly-fishing on the hotel’s renowned salmon fishery (the salmon fishing here is some of the best for miles)
  • Guided hiking tours through the Twelve Bens and Maumturk Mountains, and
  • Cycling along lakeshores.
  • Woodcock shooting,
  • Boat trips from nearby Roundstone village that includes a trip to a deserted island & lobster fishing and great hiking.

Best vacation packages

Additional Amenities: The hotel features

  • extensive walking trails,
  • a walled garden,
  • and bicycles for exploring the surrounding area.
  • Guests can unwind by one of the six open-log fires scattered throughout the castle.

The best part? Expert guides are available to assist in every activity, on the sea, the mountains, rivers, and trails, or in the library exploring the rich culture of this spectacular region.

Every morning at 9:30 am, you’ll find one of the experienced fishing guides and the walking guide, Kieran, in Reception for a coffee and a chat. Whether you’ve already booked an activity, want to make a booking, or are just seeking some advice, they are there to ensure your day gets off to a great start.

During my stay, I indulged in fly-fishing on their renowned salmon fishery—an experience that’s not just about the catch but also about the peacefulness of being surrounded by nature. The Guided hikes through the Twelve Bens Mountains offered breathtaking views that are hard to put into words.

And let’s not forget the cozy Fisherman’s Pub. The Fisherman’s Pub, with its roaring fires and hearty meals, became my favorite spot for a cozy evening with a pint and tales of the day’s adventures.

Dining:

I already mentioned The Fisherman’s Pub, where I enjoyed lunch and dinner by the cozy open-log fire. Dinner is also served in the Owenmore Restaurant, which was a highlight of my stay.

The Owenmore Restaurant’s reputation for fine dining is well-deserved. In January 2024, it was awarded Ireland’s Fine Dining Hotel Restaurant of the Year at the Gold Medal Awards. The dishes, crafted from fresh local ingredients, were a true delight for the senses. I loved how the menu changes with the seasons, ensuring that regular visitors to Ballynahinch can enjoy a varied and interesting selection of dishes. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, making each meal feel like a special occasion.

However, the hotel has a policy of welcoming non-resident guests to dine in the pub and the Owenmore Restaurant. As a result, you may notice a steady stream of visitors wandering around the lounges and building, taking photos of the rooms and artwork, and treating the hotel like a tourist attraction. This can sometimes make it a bit challenging to fully relax and enjoy the hotel.

Nearby Attractions:

Exploring  Connemara was a highlight of my trip. The location along the Wild Atlantic Way provides easy access to Connemara National Park, Killary Harbour, Inishbofin Island, and the scenic Sky Road, making it an ideal base for exploring the region’s natural wonders and cultural landmarks.

From exploring nearby Connemara National Park to taking a boat trip from the charming village of Roundstone, every outing gave us a taste of Ireland’s wild and rugged west coast. And the drives along the Wild Atlantic Way were simply breathtaking, with each turn revealing another stunning view.

Guest Experience:

What truly stood out during my visit was the warmth of the staff and their genuine hospitality. Whether offering insider tips on the best hiking trails or ensuring every detail of my stay was perfect, their dedication made me feel like part of the Ballynahinch family. I ensure you, here every guest will feel welcomed and pampered.  It isn’t cheap but well worth the experience

The free breakfast in the morning was delicious and always arrived quickly, even when the restaurant was busy.

The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere, combined with exceptional service and tasty local dishes, makes for a dining experience as memorable as the views. The Cocktail Bar is perfect for relaxing with a cleverly crafted drink, adding to the hotel’s sophisticated charm. Pair your meal with a fine wine or a creative cocktail from the stylish bar, and you’ve got a recipe for an unforgettable evening.

Guest Experience:

Throughout my stay, I was impressed by the warm hospitality of the staff, who ensured every aspect of my visit was flawless. Deirdre at reception was so welcoming & friendly & gave us lots of tips for the area. From personalized recommendations to attentive service at every turn, their commitment to guest satisfaction was evident.

From the moment you arrive, the friendly and professional staff ensure your stay is nothing short of perfect.  Little things, like homemade biscuits refilled daily in the rooms, add a personal touch that makes you feel truly pampered. The Cliff House, County Waterford

We were thrilled to visit The Cliff House Hotel. I heard the building seems to cling to the edge of a cliff on the south side of Ardmore Bay, overlooking a longstanding fishing village. They say from the sunny terraces and private balconies, you can see Ardmore’s golden beaches, lobster pots, and playful dolphins in the water. You can imagine why I was so excited!

And The Cliff House Hotel didn’t disappoint me at all.

Location and Views:

The Cliff House Hotel, located in Ardmore, County Waterford, is a luxurious and tranquil retreat along the Cork-Waterford coastline. It is known for its stunning sea views, and every part of the hotel showcases the beauty of Ardmore Bay.

The magic of the  Cliff House is how they integrate sea views into every part of the hotel. If you stay in a sea view room, you’ll see and hear the ocean right from your bed. As you enjoy a meal in the Michelin-starred restaurant, you’ll watch the sunset over the horizon. When you relax in the spa, you’ll feel like the pool is about to spill into the sea.

Accommodations:

The Cliff House Hotel has just 39 rooms. Yeah, you can say,  it’s one of the smallest romantic hotels in Ireland in this guide, but by God, it punches well above its size.

Each room and suite at the Cliff House Hotel is designed for maximum comfort and peace, featuring private balconies or terraces overlooking the Irish Sea. Rooms range from Cliff Veranda Suites to Terrace Suites and Luxury Doubles, all equipped with Wi-Fi and flatscreen TVs. Every room faces the sea, and many are interconnected to provide family-friendly options.

The hotel follows a modern Irish design with white walls, cupa stone columns, sedum moss-covered roofs, and limestone terraces. Modern comforts blend smoothly with Irish artwork and luxurious furniture, creating a stylish coastal vibe.

The bathrooms are a real treat with their colorful mosaic tiles and vibrant glass, which contrast smartly with the granite grey stone typical of the hotel.

I stayed in a sea-view room that exceeded all expectations. My room was a haven of comfort and style, with a private balcony that offered panoramic views of the Irish Sea. The floor-to-ceiling windows perfectly framed the mesmerizing ocean views. Waking up to the sound of waves and watching the sunset from my bed was a highlight of each day. You will love it.

Dining Experience:

Dining at the House Restaurant was a culinary adventure. The Michelin-starred menu showcased the best local produce, expertly prepared to deliver unforgettable flavors.

The House Restaurant offers a seasonal menu with the freshest and finest food – like lobster caught that morning, crab from the bay, or locally reared meat with home-grown vegetables. Martijn, passionate about sourcing food locally, has even established an organic vegetable garden with St Raphael’s Centre in Youghal. Each dish was a masterpiece, perfectly complemented by the restaurant’s elegant atmosphere and mesmerizing sea views. The ambiance, especially during sunset dinners, added a touch of magic to every meal.

The Bar Restaurant offers a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for enjoying sophisticated yet approachable cuisine. The menu includes a wide selection of sandwiches and seafood dishes, like seafood chowder and beef rib eye fillet. The rib-eye steaks are meltingly soft, and the desserts are classic Irish comfort food taken to the next level.

Both venues promise unforgettable culinary experiences with stunning sea views as the backdrop.

Spa and Wellness:

For relaxation, the Well  Spa by the Sea is a peaceful haven. Guests can enjoy a variety of treatments using organic seaweed products or just relax in the large swimming pool that blends perfectly with the ocean beyond. There are plenty of outdoor activities too, like exploring Ardmore Beach, taking coastal walks, or trying water sports arranged by the hotel.

I treated myself to a range of treatments, including their famous seaweed baths and soothing massages. The  spa’s design fit perfectly with its natural surroundings, letting me rest, while looking out over the calm sea. The outdoor Jacuzzi was especially memorable, providing a relaxing soak with amazing coastal views.

Activities and Nearby Attractions:

Exploring Ardmore and its surroundings was a joy. The cliff walks offered stunning views, and I loved visiting the historic Round Tower and wandering through the charming village streets. The hotel’s close location to the beach was perfect for leisurely strolls and peaceful moments by the sea.  If you’re into outdoor fun, you’ll love the water activities the hotel sets up, like kayaking or deep-sea fishing. Or, you can just chill out on Ardmore Beach and soak up the sun.

Service and Atmosphere:

During my visit, the staff at Cliff House Hotel were amazing. They were warm, friendly, and always one step ahead in making sure I had everything I needed. Whether suggesting fun local spots or booking spa treatments, their helpfulness made my stay even better.

This hotel is known for its genuine Irish hospitality. While some guests have mentioned minor issues now and then, the friendly and relaxed vibe of the place more than makes up for it.

I stayed in one of the Classic Rooms, which had a stunning view of the fast-flowing River Maigue and the picturesque golf course. Even though it’s the entry-level option, the room was far from basic. It had a king-size bed, a beautiful marble bathroom with a rain shower, and a mix of luxurious textiles and original art that made it feel both grand and cozy.

Architectural Splendor

Upon arriving at Adare Manor, the sight of the stately neo-Gothic architecture left me breathless. Nestled in an 840-acre estate along the serene River Maigue, the manor’s grandeur is immediately captivating.

I also visited The Padel Club, a modern facility featuring padel courts, a sports simulation room, and a tranquil swimming pool. The combination of activities available made it easy to stay active and relaxed during my stay.

Their On-site activities include falconry, archery, and fishing. Off-site adventures such as horseback riding and clay shooting are also available.
